Eye-Saving Highlights From the Audio Presentation:

"Nutritional treatment of cataracts works, it's very simple. The United States if far behind the other countries in the world. This is done routinely in Germany and France, Japan."

"It's far easier to prevent a cataract than to reverse it. I think the success rate in preventing the cataract could be very close to 100%."

"88% of the patients that I have put on a nutritional program over a two-year period of time improved in visual acuity. Of those who were blind before, 54% were not blind after the treatment. Approximately 54% who required surgery when they first came to me no longer needed surgery after nutritional treatment."

"In reversal, in my experience, improvement in vision is generally at least 50%, meaning that if you start nutritional therapy with a 20/100 cataract than you're likely to improve to around 20/50. If you start with someone with a 20/400 cataract, you're likely to improve to 20/200. Obviously, if you start with a 20/30 cataract you're likely to improve to 20/20."

"The risk is real when you have cataract surgery. The risk is at least 1/2 of 1% of loss of the vision in the eye. And about 5% end up with results that are as bad or slightly worse than the patient was when they had the surgery. Only about 94% of cataract operations result in a complete success. Even though cataract surgery is probably the most successful surgical procedure performed in the world today it still does have risks. And the risk, although it is small, does catch us every now and then and really makes the patient miserable."

"A person taking 200 units of vitamin E alone reduces their risk of developing a cataract by 56%."

"Persons who take vitamin E and vitamin C together have approximately 86% reduced risk in developing a cataract. Vitamin E is recycled by vitamin C so you can actually reduce the amount of vitamin E necessary by increasing the amount of vitamin C."

"The eye has the highest concentration of vitamin C than any other organ in the body. Before a cataract forms, the lens of the eye becomes completely devoid of vitamin C and also glutathione."

"Glutathione, which is a protein molecule and enzyme, was proven at the University of Minnesota to be essential for preventing cataracts. We usually make our own glutathione, but you can't make your own glutathione unless you have adequate levels of selenium in the diet. Glutathione is recycled by the body and the recycling process depends upon selenium."

"There have been several studies going back over 15 years that zinc deficiency causes cataracts."

"I had proposed 10 years ago that selenium would be proven to be essential, and at this stage, has in fact, been proven to be essential."

"Niacin and riboflavin deficiencies have been reported as causes of cataracts for many years."

"Toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium) are all causes of cataracts. In my study of 460 consecutive patients, 47% had measurable levels of toxic metals and 15.7% had significant levels of toxic metals in their system. Your chances are at least one in six that you have a significant level of toxic metals within your body."

"An excess of iron is a cause of cataracts."

"The amount of iron recommended daily, 18 mg, is based on the idea that you will absorb approximately 10% of that (about 1.8 mg), but if you take 250 mg of vitamin C, you will increase that by a factor of 4 so that the RDA of iron for a person who is taking vitamin C should be around 4 mg, not 18 mg, and it is very easy to get 4 mg in a diet."

"There's a tremendous amount in the literature now speculating ultra violet light causes cataracts. Yet, when they compare people who live in the northern climates, such as New York or Canada, with people living in Florida there hasn't been a good strong correlation. And probably the reason there hasn't been is if you're taking vitamin C and vitamin E you can neutralize the effect of free radicals produced by infrared and ultra violet."

"Lactose does penetrate into the lens of the eye and those individuals who are sensitive to lactose can develop a cataract, which is reversible if they'll stop drinking milk."

"I will start them on a good multivitamin and mineral supplement. My own personal formula is the Nutriplex (now updated to EYEMAX-plus). In an early cataract EYEMAX-plus is sufficient. Within a few months the cataract will be gone, or at least stabilized."

"I believe that when you put a patient on a nutritional program that you should give them at least 6 weeks. If there is no improvement in 6 weeks, I say go ahead and schedule the surgery. If on the other hand they have improved, most of them would like to wait another 3 months. If their vision has improved, my experience is they will decide they would like to stay on the nutritional program for another few months."

"Why should we use nutrition therapy initially for a cataract rather than going right on to surgery? Those who have been on a nutritional program heal much faster than those who have never been on a nutritional program. In my experience, they heal three times as fast. Further, in my experience, they have fewer complications."

"Although a 50% improvement in vision is typical some improve rather dramatically. I have had some patients go from 20/200 to 20/25 so sometimes the improvement is rather remarkable. And I do believe a short course of at least six weeks is always justified."

"If you started a patient on a nutritional program during the early stages of cataracts you can treat that patient for 65 years for the cost of the surgery you're going to prevent."
